Why divorce mediation can be a good alternative to litigation

As many New York couples know, marriage is not always easy. There are certainly many bumps along the way. Sometimes those bumps are too difficult to overcome and the couple ends up in divorce. This can be a very difficult process. Eventually the people may be better off apart, but getting through a divorce can be difficult, both emotionally and financially.

Modifying a child support order in New York

As parents in New York know, raising children can be expensive. This is true whether the parents are together or not. However, when the parents are split, how each parent will pay for the expenses can be a little more difficult. In order to make sure this occurs, generally there is a child support order in place. These orders make one parent pay a certain amount of money to the other parent each month to help contribute to the children's financial needs.

Through a marriage in New York, the couple may amass a number of assets as they build their life together. If the couple divorces, they will have to separate all of those assets. However, when a couple starts a high-asset divorce, they must first determine what is marital property and what is separate property.

How someone besides a child's parents can get custody

There are many family dynamics in New York. Some families consist of a married mother and father living in the same home, some families have divorced parents or parents who were never married in the first place. Sometimes other relatives take care of the children due to issues the child's parents are going through. These types of situations can create some legal complications for the relatives taking care of the children though.

Confidentiality of divorce mediation in New York

The beginning of marriages generally are very good times for the couple and both people are very happy and excited. The end of a marriage tends to be the exact opposite. People are angry with each other, emotionally hurt, unwilling to work on various issues and can be very hostile toward one another. Despite all these emotions, major decisions still need to be made during the divorce, which can be difficult.
