Drew Barrymore intends to keep family first in divorce

Fans of actress Drew Barrymore in New York may be aware that she is in the process of divorcing her husband, Will Kopelman. The couple has two children together, one three years of age and the other nearly two-years-old. Barrymore recently issued a statement indicating that the couple is focused on maintaining their family even though the couple will be divorced. The children will be the main focus for the couple.

Barrymore and her husband will have to deal with many issues during their divorce. These issues are the same types of issues that are common to any divorce. One of the more important issues to parents is the child custody determination.

In every divorce, a decision will have to be made about whether the parents will share joint custody of the children or whether one parent will have sole custody. This decision determines who will make decisions for the child and when each parent will have the children in their care. Custody decisions are made based on what is in the best interests of the child, under which a number of factors about the child's needs and each parent's ability to provide for those needs will be considered.

Many parents in New York divorce each year. These parents will have to make child custody decisions just like Drew Barrymore and her husband will need to make. Ultimately the goal is to make a determination which is in the best interest of the child. These are very fact specific matters though and each child custody determination is unique. Experienced attorneys understand these decisions though and may be a useful guide.
